The roof, in case of its quality insulation, well saves on heating costs, and well equipped, serves as additional living space in the house.
For all its relative uncomplicatedness, the procedure of insulating the roof requires some knowledge, attention and accuracy.
So let’s consider the advantages and disadvantages of different types of insulation.
The most common insulation – mineral wool, or “glass wool”, with many characteristic disadvantages, mainly – sliding down on pitched roofs, loss of properties and qualities from moisture absorption and worthless environmental.
Stone wool – a type of mineral wool obtained by melting rock basalt rocks. It’s usually pressed into very dense boards. With the disadvantage of high cost, this insulation has a lot of advantages and is very good to use, since it is little subject to deformation, has high moisture resistance, low thermal conductivity and very high rates of fire safety.
A little worse than the previous, but also a good enough material for insulation – all known plastic foam (or polystyrene foam). It is durable, moisture proof, good as soundproofing. At the same time: increased flammability, low resistance to active chemical compounds such as acetone, solvent, gasoline, problems in achieving tightness at the joints. But the thermal insulating properties are in direct dependence on the density of a particular material.
Inexpensive, lightweight, fireproof, durable material – expanded clay. It is also very environmentally friendly, resistant to rot and other decomposing factors. However, being a bulk material, can only be used on flat roofs.
A very good material is foam-isol, along with similar bulk insulation. Is a liquid mass, solidifying in interaction with the atmosphere. Forming a monolithic surface, it has no joints like foamed polystyrene, which, by the way, is very similar, but in contrast to it does not pose a fire hazard and better keeps heat. Minus – only for flat roofs.
Production of thermal insulation
And here is already built a pitched roof, laid roofing and waterproofing materials – it’s time to proceed with insulation. The procedure is as follows: from the inside lay the first layer – a heater, chosen according to the properties and cost. The second mandatory layer – vapor barrier material. Finish the process interior finishing works.
Another procedure when using bulk or poured insulation. In this case, on an even, with a solid foundation, first laid vapor barrier material, on which the poured (poured) insulator, then the waterproofing layer and directly roofing material.
